Cloud Computing
December 8th, 2009
Have you ever wondered what happens after you put all your data in the cloud? Will you always remember where you put your stuff in the cloud? Will you at some point lose things? What are you going to do?
It’s not really a question of if, but when.
Don’t ask me for solutions. This time I only provide the questions :-)

fear mongering? if anything it makes the one thing that you should think about in any business more obvious: backup strategies and there are plenty of them. if for example you’re relying on backups only and don’t plan for the complete failure of your cloud provider … well bummer, it’s like putting all your money to IBM. :P

@wnagele: I was more thinking about average people. Companies have a long history of doing backups and saveguarding their data. And yes, there is an app for that from IBM ;-) – But I am a little more concerned about someone losing my data :-)

which average people do you give your data to that you would be afraid to loose? i am having a hard time thinking of such a case …

@wnagele: wrong thought… I’m not afraid of companies losing their data; I’m afraid of average people losing their data in the cloud.
Think of your photos… you might have them on flickr, facebook, your own web page, and many more services. Basically very dispersed over the cloud. As it gets more distributed and time passes chances increase that you’ll lose data.

i really don’t see the difference in trusting a company using “the cloud” or a company not doing so. you couldn’t know what they were doing before neither can you know after … simple as that.

@wnagele: Interesting distinction there. I was not making a difference whether a company uses the cloud or not. For me the companies I entrust my data to over the Internet, like Flickr, Facebook, or Google Picasa, for all intents and purposes are the cloud.
I get the feeling that I not only have no answers to this, but also that my questions weren’t really unambiguous either. sorry for that.
