Data Center Environment Roles

September 22nd, 2009

Bobby blogged about the roles of data center environments and their qualities of service today. I think we have to be very careful. Different environments are often managed differently by operations staff in a data center and those definitions might not always match how the machines are actually used. I really like the example with Rational Asset Manager (RAM). This is something that might conceptually be a development machine, but it is a production service.

Just imagine the case that you’re performing changes to RAM. You’d not like to do that in the production instance everyone uses, but you’d rather do this on development or test. The same is true for installing maintenance. You don’t want to install maintenance on your production RAM before testing it on a comparable system, even if it’s only used for development purposes.

WSRR though is completely different. It might actually be used for production and not only for development work.
